Mike, I don't understand why you're making small shafts to represent a lines 
You can change the graphic properties of lines and points and any graphic feature to make them standout. Change the color, thickness or style of lines.
Once you become more familiar with Part Design, I'm sure you'll find that Points and Lines are not as necesary are you think (unless you do alot of GSD surface modeling)
