Default creating linetypes

I am using CAD 2004 and am trying to create a new linetype. I believe I have followed the instructions in the help file acurately and yet instead of my getting a new linetype, I get the following message "Invalid number or bad continuation." I have gone so far as to copy and past the example from the help file, and still I get the error message. Anybody have any ideas on what I could be doing wrong? Thanks!
