Talking objects, areas

I use AutoCad 2006 and i generally draw for part nesting for NC plasma tables here in our shipyard. If and when i draw a part, I can't seem to make it an object and therefore use the area tool so can calculate steel weights for the parts i draw. Any help would be great as i have to make dozens of mouse clicks to get a rough outline.
Thanks
Steve C
