Graphics problems in sketch mode

Has anybody experienced problems with rendering in sketch mode?
After drawing 2 or more entities my laptop almost grinds to a halt.

Its a 1.6GHz Celeron with 2Gb DDR2 and a 256Mb ATi Xpress card.
So as far I as can see I shouldn't be having this problem?

Please help!!!!!
