Default No dimensions on drawings

Our Engineering Director is considering eliminating most dimensions from 2D drawings and showing just enough dimensions to define the overall size or "envelope" of the part. His reasoning is that most manufacturers use the IGES or STL files to create the parts, and not showing feature dimensions on the 2D drawing will allow us to spend less time creating drawings. Can anyone see any problem with the idea of not showing all dimensions on the drawing?
