Translating children: A question for those smarter than I.

How can I transform solids without transforming their parents? I just want to translate part of the simulation rig in the z direction a couple cm to make room for a modified componant. I'm using NX4.0 in modeling of a motion simulation. Even better would be to explain why the component doesn't update when the master model is changed even when I go Tools->Update->Update Session
