How to Select Components whithout Cage

what I've done is create simple primitive, converted into editPoly, hid cage and tried to select components like vetice,edges, faces etc.. I'm just wondering if there is any way to select component with cage display switched off.

Turn off cage and hit F4 if you want shaded with wireframe.
