STL file creation is easy, but creating efficient STL files takes a bit of effort up-front. However, the time and waste savings are quickly realized and long lasting.
The RP (Rapid Prototyping) operator or user is the one who can complete your RP request more quickly if he/she has accurate yet manageable STL files.
Consider the following tips when exporting STL files from your CAD/CAM systems:
- Complexity - Parts or assemblies which are complex (e.g., curved surfaces, lofts or sweeps) require more triangles to produce accurate geometry.
- Large File Sizes - The more triangles needed to represent the part, the larger the file size. Large files can result in distribution difficulties and slower, more cumbersome manipulation of the data.
- Strike a Balance - With the cooperation of your RP operator, try your next few exports with different output settings, strike a balance between the STL file accuracy and manageable file size. You may find that your RP jobs start jumping the queue!
