Inventor: how easy is it to pick up

I have previously worked in the automotive sector with Pro/E and Catia V4, I then took a 10 year break for various reasons and now am looking at getting back into the industry.

I am specifically interested in Inventor and have downloaded and utilised the months trial software and the tutorials that go with it. This all seemed straight forward and easy to understand. So my question is...in your opinion, how easy would it be to become sufficiently proficient to be able to model fairly simple solid components. Is this something that could be done with a good book, or is a course the only way to go.
