Converting from polygonal model to volumetric model

Hi,

can someone point me to some code or material on how to automatically convert from polygonal/mesh based representation of a 3D CAD model to a volumetric voxel-based representation?

3d-Coat allows you to do this, and retopo out a clean mesh when you're done:
3D-Coat - Texturing of 3D Model

I'm not aware of any functionality in Max to do this, either stock or plug-in.
