Converting swept surface to sheetmetal part

I'm having trouble converting a swept surface into a sheetmetal part. The path of the sweep is a spiral helix. Maybe that's part of my trouble. I know that when I try to insert bends, I pick the end of the sweep and I am told that the edge is nonlinear and thus, invalid. Can you help please?
