positioning in animator?

in animator, what is the best way to move and reposition parts in complex assemblies? other than using the "move component" and "rotate component" commands, that is. i would like to be able to use the mates i have created for different configurations, but when i, say, unsuppress a mate at a specific time key, it gets applied to the entire animation and i get a warning that the zero time keys now have positions that cannot be reached.

i thought i could get around this be recreating these mates IN animator, and clicking the "use for positioning only" box. even THAT doesn't work. is there any way to accurately position parts in animator, or do i just have to eyeball everything?

any help is appreciated, thanks.
